Del Potro wins the 2009 Us Open

Del Potro has ousted Roger Federer in 5 sets to take his first grand slam title. The first set was taken by roger 6-3 and going into the 2nd set with confidence managed an early break to lead 4-2 until some raging forehand winners from Del Potro seen him return the break and go on to win the second set in a tie breaker. Federer then took control again in the 3rd set taking it 6-4 before an eager Del Potro who just wouldn't lie down with some great winners in the 4th set and once again toughing it out in a tie breaker. The pumped Argentine held his nerve and played and amazing 5th set to claim the victory 4-6 7-6 4-6 7-6 6-2. He was the man with the best form leading into the slam however pulling this off was a huge achievement for him and I was very impressed with how he handled himself in the final, I wish him all the best in future slams and its also nice to have another gun right in the markets now.

Us Open Underway

The US Open is now underway as we are aware of and I'm still in favor of Rafael Nadal bringing home the goods. You can see http://theatptour.blogspot.com/2009/07/us-open.html for what I wrote about the US Open a bit over a month back. Nadal is currently still a great price for those of you who are willing to put a wager on him, just try to get the best possible price. Anyway folks I don't have a whole lot to say today but I'm interested in other peoples thoughts and tips always so If you do happen to drop by here don't hesitate in giving your two cents worth.

Andy Murray Prevails in Montreal

Andy Murray the number three seed has ended Juan Martin Del Potro's winning streak with a 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 6-1 victory earlier this evening. Murray who will now replace Rafael Nadal as the number 2 ranked player earned himself $443,500 and 1000 ATP tour ranking points.
Del Potro who played his 9th match in just 13 days seemed to be worn down in the final set by the persistent Murray, none the less a match that was so very close during the first 2 sets.
So now I guess we all wonder just can the Brit win his first grand slam in the US Open which kicks off at the end of August or will the experience of grand slams set in and see a Nadal or Federer victory, I guess time will tell.

Del Potro Salutes in Washington

Juan Martin Del Potro Celebrated in Washington (9/8/09) after dismissing Andy Roddick in three sets. Roddick took the first set 6-3 and looked the goods but as we have seen quite a few times this year the Argentine after losing the first set coming back to claim victory in 3. There was little between them in the final set tiebreaker with the scoreline finishing 3-6 7-5 7-6(6). Del Potro commented after the match:
"I’m very happy to win another title and defend this championship."
"Roddick is in much better condition this year. His game has improved a lot. I beat him, but the difference was so close."

Gonzalez shows fine form in Washington

Fernando Gonzalez impressed in his quarter final match up with in form Tommy Haas after claiming victory 7-5 6-4 in 83 minutes. Dominant serving by both players in the first set lead to very few break point opportunities. It wasn't til late into the 11th game that Gonzalez took advantage of a break point to lead 6-5, he then went on to claim the set 7-5. The second set was a little different as Gonzalez raced to a 5-2 lead with a double break. Haas managed to regain a break back but the Chilean closed it out 7-5 6-4. Gonzalez will now face Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in the semi final later this evening with the winner to meet either John Isner or Andy Roddick in the final.

Unstoppable Davydenko

Davydenko claimed back to back titles yesterday with a very convincing 6-3 6-0 victory over Juan Carlos ferrero. The 28 year old claimed a top 10 2009 ATP airways ranking back whilst also going on a 10th successive winning streak. This is Davydenko's 16th career ATP title.

Thomaz Belluci wins first title

Brazilian Thomaz Belluci has claimed his first ever title defeating first time finalist Andreas Beck in the Gstaad final on the 2nd on August. Belluci was a wildcard into the draw and went on to claim the title 6-4 7-6(2). He was asked after the match how it feels to capture his first world tour title as a qualifier, and heres what he has to say, "For sure it was the best week of my career. I played unbelievably in three or four matches, I won against Wawrinka, Andreev and today I beat Beck. So, for me, it was an incredible week. I played the qualifying, then in the first round I was two match points down, so I was very lucky but I’m very happy.”

Stanislas Wawrinka bows out in hometown

Earlier this evening Stanislas Wawrinka was knocked out in the 2nd round of the GSTAAD open to Brazilian Thomoz Belluci. Wawrinka certainly suprised me with his 6-4 6-4 defeat but I guess thats just tennis. Belluci will now face Nicolas Kiefer to book a place in the semi final where he will join Marcos Daniel, Andreas Beck and the winner of Igor Andreev/Jeremy Chardy.

I had given Wawrinka a rough chance of progressing far in the US open so we will just have to see how he goes after this defeat.

ATP Los Angeles round one winners

The Los Angeles Open is underway with Robbi Genepri bowing out first round To Marat Safin. The Indianapolis chamion who deafted big Sam Querry in there final found big serving Marat just a little bit to much in there 3 set encounter after marat claimed the match 3-6 6-3 6-4. None the less its fair to say Genepri has been delivering some decent form since his embarrassing loss on centre court to Llyeton Hewitt at Wimbledon. Other Los Angles First Round winners Included Gulbis, Sweeting, Querry, Isner, Bagdatis, Mayer and Kunitsyn.
The LA tournament seems to be up for grabs and could lead somebody into some promising form leading into the US Open. My tip is Bagdatis.

GSTAAD Updates

Igor Andreev made steady progress in his match earlier this evening with a solid 6-4 6-1 victory over Jan Herych. The russian never really looked in doubt during his match and now begans a main chance of winning the tournament. He will now meet Jeremy Chardy in the quater finals after Chardy defeated Mikhail Youzny 6-3 5-7 6-3. Other winners included Andres Beck who fought out a tought match to beat Garcia-Lopez 7-6(3) 1-6 7-6(3) whilst Crivoi put pay to Gabashville 6-4 6-4.

Davydenko ends drought

Nickolay Davydenko has clinched his first atp title in over a year after convincingly defeating frenchmen Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4 6-2. The russian will receive 500 ATP tour ranking points along with €228,000. This is the 28 yr olds 15th ATP world tour title and he also becomes the first Russian to lift the Hamburg title.
A very fine effort Nickolay you deserve this one !!

ATP Indianapolis / Hamburg

Robby Genepri dismisses big John Isner in the semi final at indianapolis to join fellow team mate Sam Querry in an all american final. Genepri suprised most people with a solid 6-4 6-3 victory. Meanwhile over in Hamburg Nicolay Davydenko (left) has fought off a tough David Ferrer in straight sets 7-5 7-6(2) after coming from behind in both sets. Davydenko has made a solid comeback from injury and now meets French rising sensation Paul-Henri Mathieu in the final later this evening.

US Open

The next Grand slam to begin is the US Open which kicks off at the end of august. I personally think nadal can win this US Open and get the only slam that his yet to win. We seen federer take the 2009 french open crown to finally conquer all 4 slams, I think nadal can do the same. The only query about nadal obviously at the moment is his knees and whether or not he will actually start. Nadal has suffered tendornitis of the knees which forced him to withdrawl from wimbledon this year so there might be a few queries. I think if he starts in this years US Open then he should be 100% fit and he can bring home the bacon, what an effort it would be if he does. Federer is the other obvious threat and he might just claim his 3rd slam in a row after previously coming off what we could call "rare" form for roger, however his now back to his best and looks the man to beat. Other darkhorse chances if your going to have a bet are Juan Martin Del Potro, Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco, Fernando Gonzalez and if your game at odds Ernest Gulbis and Stanislas Wawrinka. Obvious other choices in the market are Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic however we are going to let these two slide. Previous slams show the top ranked players always seemingly coming through in the finals so just maybe we could be in for an upset. Having said that I'm sticking to my guns and tipping Rafael Nadal if he starts.
